Afghan Police Mentors Step Up Work Date: Friday, August 27, 2010 |
Mobile recruiting stations have been travelling across Afghanistan as part of a move to swell the ranks of the country’s fledgling national police force. In an initiative to bring more civilians into the law enforcement fold, numbers of recruiters have been tripled and mentors – which include private security personnel, British police officers and soldiers – have been helping to further develop the training infrastructure. Personnel serving with the Royal Military Police and MoD Police as part on 4 Mechanized Brigade have been playing a key role in bringing those joining up-to-speed in Helmand, and say they are now seeing a marked improvement in capability. British Army spokesman Capt Jon Gilbody said that the police mentors had been hugely impressed with the way the ANP had been developing. He told SecurityOracle.com: “We have many people now going through training centres and there are passing out parades being held on a regular basis. “The police leave the centres very well prepared for the difficult streets of Helmand province. While they have been successfully working alongside both British troops, they are increasingly able to take the lead in their own operations.” Capt Gilbody was speaking as officers serving with the ANP personnel seized a huge quantity of ammonium nitrate fertilizer – the key ingredient in roadside bombs. Officers from the 404th ANP Corps made the 7,500kg seizure at Kandahar City Customs Office following intelligence reports. Four suspects were detained. Those involved in the operation were congratulated by Commander ISAF, Gen David Petraeus, who said Afghan intelligence and interdiction capabilities had improved. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for the ANP, a demonstration of the increasing capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces,” he added. “The material seized would have enabled the Taliban to do enormous harm.”
