Sneaky council CCTV Smart cars are stinging motorists for £8million a year in parking fines.

The two-seaters are parked legally at problem spots to film drivers who break the rules.

Last year 54 cars, operated by 31 different councils across the UK, caught out almost 200,000 motorists - fining them up to £120 a time.

One car in the London borough of Barking and Dagenham hit 14,851 drivers for £659,591.

Anti-surveillance group Big Brother Watch said: "This a dangerous escalation of our surveillance society." The Local Government Association said the CCTV cars punished drivers who "thought they were above the law".
