A man was ordered to pay £1,500 compensation to a Peterborough bouncer after he caused him to slip and rupture his tendon.

Adam O'Neill (20), of Great Whyte, Ramsey, near Peterborough, pleaded guilty to using threatening words and behaviour outside Liquid nightclub, in New Road, Peterborough at Peterborough Crown Court yesterday (7 January).

He was ordered to take an anger management course, carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and pay his victim, head doorman Matthew Rainer, £1,500 compensation.

Georgina Gibbs, prosecuting, told the court how O'Neill and a friend were kicked out of the back door of the club at 1am on June 12 by Mr Rainer for being aggressive on the dance floor.

O'Neill, who had been drinking heavily, ran around the back of the club and confronted Mr Rainer at the front door.

The court was shown CCTV footage of the incident.

The footage showed O'Neill pointing and shouting at the doorman, before he flicked Mr Rainer's face.

It was then the pair started to struggle as Mr Rainer tried to detain O'Neill.

During the melée, Mr Rainer slipped and suffered a rupture to a tendon in his right leg, which needed hospital treatment.

He later developed a blood clot at the top of his leg, believed to be caused by the fall.

Miss Gibbs said: "Mr Rainer was unable to work for a long period of time after the incident and that had a major impact on his finances.

"He was put on a medical treatment that meant he needed eight injections every day and he was in excruciating pain."

Mr Rainer has since returned to work at the club.

Defending, Nicola Devas said: "The defendant accepts that the cause of his problems is that there are occasions when he goes out and drinks too much. And he accepts that when he is in drink, he becomes more aggressive, and he has realised that he has to deal with that problem.

"But he does not use that as an excuse.

"He is taking steps to reduce his alcohol intake.

"He has a six-month-old child and he takes his responsibility as a father seriously and does not want to end up in prison.

"And his actions did not directly result in the injury of Mr Rainer."

But Judge Peter de Mille said: "It is clear to me that you led the group of people to the front of the nightclub.

"You were the one who approached the doorman and waved and pointed aggressively in his face. I can understand why he felt he was going to be attacked.

"I am satisfied that this incident led to him suffering his injuries."
