Concern Mounts over Greek Riots Date: Thursday, May 06, 2010 |
Employees working for British interests in the Greek capital Athens have been warned to be on their guard after a third day of rioting in the city left three dead yesterday, May 5. According to reports, the two women and a man died when demonstrations against harsh austerity measures proposed by the Government turned violent. They had been trapped in a bank that was set on fire after a petrol bomb was thrown. All succumbed to smoke inhalation. Journalists have suggested that the demonstration had been peaceful, but descended into a major public order incident when a small minority became violent. The Greek Government is battling huge financial problems and has proposed massive spending cuts – a condition of a £95 billion proposed European bail out package. The ugly demonstrations in the capital have prompted the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office to revise its advice to nationals currently in country. The guidance suggests that those in the country should “exercise extreme caution” around public demonstrations and expect strikes throughout this month. The FCO advice also emphasises that domestic anarchist groups remain active in the country, citing that there have been some incidents of police being attacked by small arms fire.
