Being a Door Supervisor can be difficult enough; being in charge of a team of Door Supervisors brings additional challenges. From organising and managing team members to dealing with the expectations of both venue operators and customers, the head door supervisor is faced with a complex task. Failing to adequately supervise the security team or to meet everyone’s expectations can result in confrontations and poor customer service.

Rutherford Training has addressed these problems in its new Level 3 BTEC in Security Management (Head Door Supervision) accredited by Edexcel and Skills for Security. The two day programme offers those responsible for door supervisors the opportunity to gain the necessary leadership, management and operational skills to manage an operational team effectively.

Ian Rutherford, Managing Director of Rutherford Training, said: ‘Through my own industry background and experience it was evident that there was a clear gap between the basic SIA training and the skills that were required to operate effectively as a Head Door Supervisor. So this programme was developed to underpin and expand the knowledge that has already been obtained and provide additional skills that are needed to manage a team effectively.’

The course has already been piloted in London in a variety of venues. The pilot was a success and those that attended enjoyed the informal style of delivery, and found the real world applications to have been extremely useful.

Bob Doyle, Director of Commercial Services at Skills for Security comments: ‘This provides an ideal start on a career path within door security and it is a positive step for professionalising the vital services that door security personnel provide. Skills for Security is pleased to endorse the Rutherford Security Management (Head Door Supervision) programme and will be running the first courses in Worcester in March 2009.’
