The Worshipful Company of Security Professionals has presented Steve Kimber, the Managing Director of Southern Monitoring Services Limited and founding Chairman of the Fire and Security Association (FSA), with the 2009 Peter Greenwood Award.

The award, which is now sponsored by the FSA and which this year, was presented at the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) Annual Dinner at The Grosvenor Hotel, Park Lane, London, was created in the memory of Peter Greenwood, who was the Head of the ECA Security Group (now part of the FSA) and was a founder member of the Security Industry Lead Body (SILB).  In his position as Chairman of the SILB Implementation Group, Peter worked tirelessly to enhance professionalism on behalf of the entire Security Profession via the introduction of new National Vocational Qualifications.

In an industry not always known for its levels of co-operation between its many sectors, Peter represented the values of fairness, conciliation and innovation, which he always encouraged the industry to adopt.  Peter had a clear vision that of the wider world of security could work closely together, providing top quality service delivery to all its customers.  Even in ill health, his energy, good humour and concern for the good of the profession never deserted him.

On his death in January 1995 his then Deputy Chairman on the SILB Implementation Group, felt it appropriate to create an annual award to be offered to an individual who demonstrated the same kind of enthusiasm and selfless concern for the profession which Peter himself unerringly demonstrated.

This year’s recipient of the Peter Greenwood Award is Steve Kimber, Chairman of the FSA.  Steve joined the systems sector as an apprentice in 1974, and has worked tirelessly over the last 20 years to raise the standard of professionalism within the sector; he has been involved in chairing and participating on many industry groups including standards committees, inspectorate boards, trade association committees and working with practitioners, influencers and specifiers.

In addition to his Chairmanship of the FSA, his voluntary work for the sector includes: Current member of the NSI Security Systems Section Committee

Current Committee member of the British Standards Institute
Current observer to the SSAIB Board
Current member of the ECA Council
Member of the BSIA Council for 10 years until 2006
Chairman of BSIA's Security Systems Section until June 2006
ARC representative to Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Security Industry Working Group for 12 years until 2006
BSIA representative to IPCRES for 10 years until 2006

Steve also sits on various adhoc technical working groups associated with FSA, NSI or BSI and represents the Security Industry through the FSA to ACPO, CFOA, ABI, Home Office & the SIA.

Una Riley, Past Master of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals and creator and Guardian of the Peter Greenwood Award said: “I consider Steve to be a worthy recipient of the 2009 award. He has shown dedication to the systems sector throughout his career and continues to represent the interests of professionals within our line of work.  I am also delighted that the Peter Greenwood Award is now presented in partnership with the FSA, a development I believe Peter would have highly approved of.”
