Fears Grow Over Northern Ireland Security Date: Monday, June 07, 2010 |
Concerns have been voiced about the security situation in Northern Ireland amid revelations that attacks against police in the province are on the increase. According to figures for the past year, nearly 3,290 officers were assaulted – up sharply from 2,912 in 2008-09. North Belfast was the worst affected area, accounting for more than 300 of the attacks, with the Foyle district running a close second. DUP MLA Lord Morrow, Chair of the Northern Ireland Assembly Justice Committee, told reporters that he was "horrified" to read the latest statistics. The politician, who received the figures after submitting a question to the Justice Minister, has demanded to know how the attacks were dealt with and their outcomes in the legal system. Morrow said: "It's not acceptable in this day and age and there is a responsibility on society to give their full and unqualified support to the police." Lord Morrow received the figures after submitting a question to the Justice Minister. He said: "The general trend, with a few exceptions, shows an increase of assaults. “I am keen to learn how these matters were dealt with through the courts, and have submitted a further question to the Minister of Justice to this effect."
