Friends and colleagues of a former PSNI officer have been remembering his many achievements after he was killed while helping to mentor police in Afghanistan.

Ken McGonigle (51) had been working at the NATO Training Mission in Musa Qala, Helmand, with private security firm New Century when he was killed alongside two US Marines.

Reports suggest that the trio died after a prisoner they had escorted to prayers managed to grab a weapon and opened fire on his guards in an escape attempt on Saturday.

The prisoner was later shot and killed. The incident remains under investigation.

In a statement to SecurityOracle.com, New Century said the thoughts and prayers of its employees were with Mr McGonigle’s family and many friends.

The former PSNI officer, who was from County Londonderry, was described by the company as being highly professional and committed to making a difference.

The New Century statement added “His presence and contribution will be sorely missed by everyone in the company and at the NATO Training Mission

“Ken was a highly professional, deeply competent, well-admired and thoroughly committed colleague who made a material difference through his work.”

New Century was founded by Col (Retd) Tim Collins, a former commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment. The respected officer held a series of senior posts during a distinguished Army career, including working closely with the RUC Special Branch in Northern Ireland.
