A "Lone wolf" suspect was seized in New York last night for trying to build a pipe bomb to attack troops returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.

Jose Pimentel, 27, is said to have followed instructions from an al-Qaeda magazine.

He also allegedly planned to target police and post office workers.

Pimentel was caught drilling into a pipe at his mum's flat after being under police surveillance for two years.

New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said: "The suspect was a so-called "lone wolf", motivated by his own resentment of the presence of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as his influence by al-Qaeda propaganda.

"He was not part of a larger conspiracy emanating from abroad."

Pimentel got plans for the weapon from Inspire — a magazine published by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

He faces three terrorism-related charges.

Since the 9/11 attacks by al-Qaeda ten years ago, New York has been a prime terror target.

Its extensive intelligence network has led to several high-profile arrests including Afghan-born US resident Najibullah Zazi in 2009. He plotted a suicide bomb attack on the subway system.
