Nightclub Bouncer Jailed For Four Years Date: Friday, January 27, 2012 |
A bouncer left a reveller with a broken jaw by repeatedly kicking him in the head because he was dancing in the wrong spot. Victim Nicholas Caulfield was enjoying a night out with friends at Newcastle nightclub Tiger Tiger when he was dragged off the dance floor by Paul Innerd, who took him into a side room and beat him up. Newcastle Crown Court heard Mr Caulfield had not been aggressive or cheeky to Innerd, whose only explanation for the violence was that the victim had been dancing on a raised area of the floor near the DJ booth. Having pulled Mr Caulfield into a room, the door supervisor booted him in the head as he lay on the concrete floor at least four times, smashing his jaw. Mr Caulfield, who works in marketing, was off work for 53 days after the attack and, in a statement to the court, outlined the misery it has caused him. “The assault has had a long-lasting effect on my life, the injury has still not properly healed and I may never regain a full range of movement,” the 30-year-old said. “I was unable to eat solid foods for three weeks and it was unbelievably frustrating, embarrassing and extremely painful. “It has had an impact mentally as well. I’m usually quite sociable, but since this happened I have become introverted and suffer from anxiety. “I have vivid flashbacks of the incident and dreams about my jaw being broken. Reliving the experience is traumatic and leaves me on edge.” Mr Caulfield has been left with a below-average bite, numbness in his cheek and his jaw sometimes locks. A keen sportsman, he played water polo to a high standard and was planning to run a marathon, but was unable to train after the injury. The injury has had an impact on his scuba diving too. The attack happened last March in the club, which is part of The Gate complex on Newgate Street. Innerd, 29, of October Courtyard, Staiths South Bank, Gateshead, was found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and was jailed for four years. Recorder David Wilby told him: “You were a door supervisor and the reason you were there was to protect people and to look after them and to make sure there was order. “This man was not aggressive to you, he was not very drunk or causing a nuisance and nobody complained about him, and there was no notice telling people they should not go on this raised piece of dance floor. “I don’t understand why it was necessary to take someone who was doing no wrong out of the club, but you dragged him through a door where you thought you would not be seen and, while on the ground, defenceless, you repeatedly, at least four times, maybe more, kicked him in the head. “You are lucky your striking of him did not lead to a serious brain injury.” Courtesy of SecurityOracle.com - The Secury Industry's Portal |
