Security Alert At British Embassy

Security Alert At British Embassy

Date: Thursday, March 11, 2010
Source: The Sun Online

Scores of Argentine protesters armed with petrol bombs tried to storm the British Embassy in Buenos Aires yesterday.

Around 100 masked activists marched on the building and burned the Union Flag to demonstrate against our ownership of the Falklands.

The unrest came amid tensions over a UK bid to drill for oil around the islands.

The club-wielding mob tried to smash through a barricade but were pushed back by cops. Bags of petrol bombs meant for the embassy were also seized.

Argentina has renewed its call for sovereignty over the Falklands nearly 30 years after the 1982 war - which cost 255 British lives before the islands were retaken.

The Sun told how destroyer HMS York last month intercepted an Argentine warship in the first head-to-head of the latest row.

The Foreign Office last night described yesterday's violence as "minor" but thanked Argentine police for defending the embassy.
