Security Guard Stole £96,000 & Blew The Lot At Casino

A security guard who stole £96,000 from a bank safe and lost the lot in one reckless night of gambling avoided a jail sentence when a judge took pity on him.

The court heard that 22-year-old Mirnes Hermann was exposed to a 'fatal temptation' when he was told told to guard a faulty safe at a branch of the Commerzbank in Hamburg, Germany.

He had to spend the night alone keeping watch on the unlocked safe stuffed with 200 and 500 euro notes with the security cameras switched off.

'Never before in my life had I seen so much money. I thought there was enough to make all my dreams come true,' said Mirnes, whose monthly wage was about £350.

He grabbed several wads of cash, stuffed them in his jacket and paid £1300 for a taxi to take him to Graz in Austria.

But his hopes of winning a fortune in the casino were soon dashed and by dawn he was almost broke.

Mirnes caught a train back to Hamburg and gave himself up to police.

The public prosecutor asked the judge to impose a jail sentence of one year and eight months - a fairly mild punishment considering the maximum for such an offence is 10 years.
Judge Bjorn Jonsson took pity on Mirnes and gave him a suspended sentence.

'When bank managers walk around free after losing millions I don't see why I should punish ordinary people,' said Judge Jonsson said.

Mirnes, who has no private means and has been fired from his job, will never be able to repay the money he stole.

The public prosecutor is considering an appeal.
