A military base was sealed off for five hours in a security alert — caused by a tired sniffer dog.

Weary mutt Heny suddenly sat down as she was led by her handler around a truck which had just driven in.

Sitting is one action by sniffer dogs that indicates the presence of explosives. Then Heny’s handler spotted a suspicious package — and the alarm was raised.

Buildings were evacuated near Lakenheath, Suffolk, a 500ft cordon erected and a controlled explosion carried out.

A spokesman for the US Air Force base said: “Checks had indicated there may have been a suspicious package on a vehicle. Sniffer dogs are trained when they sniff something to sit down. A dog sat down and everything kicked off.”

But a base source said Heny, a Belgian Malinois just wanted a breather, adding: “It’s a bit embarrassing the base had to be shut for five hours, but you can’t be too careful.”
