The Government recently announced their commitment to invest 1 billion pounds in apprenticeships throughout 2009/10. The reason for this large investment is that more apprentices are required in order for the UK to have access to skilled workers to remain competitive. The security sector in particular suffers from recruiting and retaining skilled workers and apprenticeships could help to rectify this concern.

David Greer, Chief Executive of Skills for Security comments, “The tough economic climate makes training and investing in your employees difficult, but more employers should consider the business benefits of apprenticeship programmes, especially as funding is available. It is time that the stale image of apprenticeships is erased and this investment from the Government is a sign of their true value to businesses.”

The Government will be encouraging employers to learn about the business benefits of apprenticeship programmes during Apprenticeship week taking place from 23rd February – 27th February. Various activities have been planned throughout this week, including a national employer event hosted by Ministers, a special edition of the Apprenticeship Employer Newsletter and web, TV and radio coverage.

Skills for Security has decided to celebrate apprenticeship week for the security sector by organising a number of free breakfast seminars  which will focus on the specific benefits of security systems and guarding apprenticeships.
