Schools are hiring bouncers to control rowdy pupils, it was revealed yesterday.

Heads at problem schools recruit tough guys as stand-in teachers when staff go sick.

Bouncers cost less than the £200-a-day supply teachers and keep better discipline, they say.

In one school, two were given permanent jobs as classroom supervisors but one was disciplined after clashing with staff.

Heads also advertise in trade mags for “people with ex-military or police experience”.

Stern
The tactics were revealed at the National Union of Teachers’ conference in Cardiff.

Maths teacher Andrew Baisley told delegates: “Some schools think being stern and loud is the only skill you need.

"They appear to believe covering lessons is about crowd control. I know of bouncers being employed specifically because they are bouncers.”

Unions want the Government to create a pool of qualified teachers to work as stand-ins.

Schools Minister Sarah McCarthy-Fry said: “It is up to heads to determine the best systems.”
