Tesco is spying on staff toilets with security cameras - to catch workers spending too long on loo breaks.

Caught-short employees deemed to be lingering are being given warnings.

Outraged staffers say the move - using CCTV cameras originally installed in corridors outside restrooms for security purposes - violates their rights.

But Tesco says bosses are allowed use the gadgets for any for any reason they see fit.

One worker at a branch in Sutton, South London, said yesterday: "Management are timing the time people take in there.

"People are finding themselves rushing in the loo so as not to get in trouble."

A Tesco web forum poster fumed: "They can't use security systems to spy on staff unless they have a valid reason."

But another wrote: "If it catches out staff having a crafty tea break it could prove a hit."

A Tesco spokeswoman said: "These cameras were initially used for security reasons but management can use them for other issues if they so wish.

"They certainly would not look into the toilets."

She added: "Staff may be disciplined if management feel there is good reason to do so."
