BSIA Welcomes NI Regulation ConsultationTue, October 03, 2006Source: BSIAThe BSIA has welcomed the Government’s consultation paper on regulation of the private security industry in Northern Ireland. The BSIA has welcomed the Government’s consultation paper on regulation of the private security industry in Northern Ireland. The consultation paper was launched on Tuesday 30th August at a meeting of the BSIA’s Northern Ireland Regional Committee, which was attended by Paul Goggins MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and Robin Dahlberg, Chairman of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Speaking at the launch, BSIA Director of Membership and Technical Support Services Alex Carmichael, commented: “The BSIA has been a staunch supporter of regulation in England and Wales, and in Scotland where it is due to commence next year. In fact we lobbied for the Private Security Industry Act for over a decade and have worked closely with the Security Industry Authority to ensure that it has been successfully implemented. “Our members welcome the proposals to extend licensing to Northern Ireland. This will enable the authorities to remove the minority criminal element from the industry, which unfortunately has a disproportionate effect on the industry’s reputation. Regulation will thus reassure customers and also the general public of the suitability and credibility of security personnel who perform such a vital role protecting both people and assets. “We have recommended Option 3 to our members and will be responding to the consultation paper in due course, having fully canvassed their opinions. If either option 3 or 4 are accepted, the transitional arrangements from Schedule 13 to licensing under a regulator must be addressed immediately. We are keen to work with the Government to ensure that these arrangements are stringent and provide a good platform on which regulation can be built.”
