The Treasury is to fight a watchdog's demand for it to publish a secret progress report on the controversial ID card scheme.

The Treasury is to fight a watchdog's demand for it to publish a secret progress report on the controversial ID card scheme.

Information Commissioner Richard Thomas ruled earlier this year that a review of the scheme should be opened to public inspection.

But the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) - a part of the Treasury which oversees IT projects - said it had "sufficient grounds" to appeal the decision.

High-risk public sector schemes are subject to regular reviews to gauge progress at various stages, giving them a red, amber or green-light rating.

Computer Weekly magazine claimed the appeal could cost taxpayers £100,000.
